Professional Interest: My research interest is to answer the following question:  What are the factors that influence the success of leadership education programs?  For this research question, I investigate various contexts such as youth organizations, collegiate academic courses and programs, collegiate student organizations, athletics, and others.

Townsend has served as Department Head, Undergraduate Coordinator, and undergraduate advisor for the Agricultural Leadership and Development major.  From 1995-2005, each year, she advised approximately 1/3 of the 1,000 students participating in the major.

Townsend has chaired over 100 graduate student committees.  These students have completed their research under Townsend’s direction and have centered on her primary inquiry to investigate effective leadership education programs for youth, collegiate students, and adults.  She has presented over 400 invited leadership education seminars and programs throughout the United States.
